THE ECONOMY OF CAMPANIA Most of the population work in the state services (public admin, education, health), a sizeable proportion is employed in industry and a very little part in agriculture. Campania’ s employment is significantly higher than in the rest of Italy. It is consistently higher for women than for men. Another indicator of Campania’ s position in economy is the GDP (domestic product) in 2001, Campania had a GDP of 13.080euro per head and it is one of the lowest in Italy. There aren’ t many local plans to sort the problem of unemployment out. Nowadays European Community is funding projects to develop industrial sectors of this area that in the last few years has been ignored. Moreover, Campania’ s young people aged 18-30 try to leave this area to find better job opportunities in the north of Italy or abroad. Apart of this, a lot of people work in manufacturing and third sector services, above all in tourism, mainly the Amalfitan coast or historical places like Naples, Pompei, Ercolano and Paestum. | |||||||||
