Sometimes grammar rules are not very helpful. The "rule "here is that "do" is for activities

I'm doing the washing

and "make" is for creativity

I'm making a cake

but there are so many exceptions that this rule is not very helpful. A good dictionary will be more helpful to you than anything I can say. Sorry!

Here are some common expressions with 'make'

an appointment, an arrangement, a difference, an exception, an effort, an excuse, an attempt, a complaint, contacts, a decision,something better, a bid, a call on somebody, something clear, a profit, a loss, a mess, a mistake, money, a noise, a note, a plan, a promise, progress, a start, a suggestion, sure

Here are some common expressions with 'do'

my best, the accounts, the cleaning, the shopping, the accounts, you a favour, your worst, everything I can, nothing, something, well, badly, OK, without, business
